Sunset Concerts Kick Off in Carbodale

The Carbondale summer tradition of drinking outdoors while talking over some band we’ve never heard of kicked off in Carbondale last Thursday and continues tonight at Turley Park. This longstanding summer concert series brings people out from all over Southern Illinois for grilling, drinking, dancing, socializing and people watching.

The shows alternate from the steps of Shryock on campus to the Turley Park gazebo. They kick off at 7:00pm and usually wrap up by 9:00pm.  Drinking is allowed within a designated area, but no kegs or glass bottles are allowed. It also goes without saying that NO underage drinking is allowed, and this is typically enforced by SIU or Carbondale police. If you look remotely close to or under 21 years old, you may be asked to provide ID.

Some folks like to bring small grills and chairs and claim a spot for the evening. If you prefer to stay mobile, pack light. Ditch the ice and opt for a small shoulder bag type cooler and maybe a few blue packs to keep your drinks cold. Your back will thank you for it later.

Don’t bring your entire apartment with you!

In typical fashion, this year’s line up consists of several regional or national touring bands,  most of which you probably haven’t heard of before.  But the SIUC Student Programming Council does well to pull together a variety of genres in attempt to provide a little something for everyone. The most intriguing act this year, Atlanta’s  Blair Crimmins & the Hookers,  visits July 5th.
