Did you know Carbondale has its own Cuban restaurant? If your answer is no, then you’re not alone. Sadly, those still in the dark about this hidden away break from the ordinary are seriously missing out.
Mostly to blame for the lack of awareness about this place is its location inside Key West. Yes, you have to walk through the Key West entrance to see the food counter and dining area. Combine this with hard to see location of Key West on the corner of a shopping center on West Main Street (across from Schnucks), and it’s no wonder many people have no idea it’s there.
Word of mouth is finally getting out thankfully, and we hope business continues to grow at this location. They’ve recently added Road Runners delivery service as an option which should also help make it more accessible for those who still aren’t sure how to get there.
I tried the “Create a Sampler” with Black Beans & Rice, a Guava & Cream Cheese Empanada and Plantains. Other empanada choices include Chicken & Cheese, Beef & Cheese or Pork, Yuca and Black Bean. Other side options include Yuca Fries or Ham Croquettes. (Think of all of the combination options!!)
The Black Beans & Rice were far from bland and seasoned perfectly. The empanada was delightful with just the right amount of warm sweet filling inside the chewy crust. The plantains were a great compliment to the meal, and always a favorite of mine. So happy to see them on a Carbondale menu!
There are plenty of other options to try on the menu that you are likely not to find anywhere else in the area…Caribbean Wings, Tilapia Sandwich, Picadillo or Stuffed Potato Balls are just a few options unique to this place, not to mention a variety of pork or beef sandwiches and entrees, soups and sides.
The next time you are trying to figure out where to order lunch or grab dinner, consider Lill Taste of Cuba. Wake up your taste buds, support local business and be thankful for a dining option that’s far from ordinary.
