Fall is always the best time of year in these parts weather-wise, which makes it the best time to get out and about and enjoy the scenery and take advantage of shows and events. It’s important we make the most of these perfect days and cool nights before the gloom of winter and early sunsets slowly steal our will to live.
It happens to be Family Weekend at SIU, so lookout for some extra traffic and crowds around town. The football Salukis have their first conference game of the season Saturday when they host Youngstown State. This is a Blackout Cancer game, and kickoff is at 6:00PM. Visit the SIU Football page for more info. The SIU Volleyball team is also busy this weekend, hosting Bradley Friday night at 7PM and Loyola Saturday at 3PM at Davies Gym.
If sports isn’t your thing, and you’re more of an artsy-fartsy type, you should check out Sustain 2: ECO Art and Artisan Fair on Thursday from 11AM-5PM in the Faner Breezeway, with a lecture in the University Museum Auditorium to follow at 6PM.
The SIU Department of Cinema and Photography hosts their first Film Friday of the season on Friday at the Varsity Center for the Arts. Lost Familiar Spaces features four experimental films beginning at 4:30PM. Admission is FREE.
Or if you are in the mood to cruise around in the country and take in some local brews and wines, visit your favorite winery or one of new breweries popping up in our area. Visit our Wineries & Microbreweries listing to find handy links to their websites or Facebook pages.
Did we mention the farmer’s markets? Carbondale now has not one, but two farmer’s markets on either side of town every Saturday morning. This is the perfect excuse to drag your tail out of bed and get out early to pick up some fresh, local produce. And both of these markets offer much, much more than produce including local meats, artisan cheeses, fresh made juice, (I’ve been LOVING Juicing Bar!) coffee, crafts, plants, sauces, jams and of course, live music. Check out Carbondale Farmer’s Market and Carbondale Community Farmer’s Market.
Lots of great live music is happening this weekend, starting tonight with the return of County Graves at Hangar 9, opening up for Larry & His Flask, and the incredible Murder by Death. Also, don’t miss Jenny Johnson & Friends at The Old Feed Store in Cobden on Saturday. This promises to be a great show!
Festivals this weekend include the 2nd Annual CarbondALE Microbrew & Music Festival at Hangar 9, which features 30 beers from various breweries throughout the Midwest. Also this weekend is the 5th annual Marion Main Street Hubfest on the Marion town square.
Whatever you decide to do, please just get out and do something!
